If you want to apply for cooling components of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) spring subsidy, they are now received, on a first-come, first-served basis, until May 31 or until the funds allocated for the program are depleted. Kentucky households up to 150% of the federal poverty guidelines may receive a benefit to help with their household electricity costs.
The cooling component of the spring subsidy provides households with a one-time benefit ranging from $38 to $200, depending on income levels and housing category. The benefit is paid directly to each home’s electricity supplier.
These are the requirements that applicants must comply with at the time of application:
- Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) for each household member.
- Proof of income from the previous month for all household members.
- Most recent electric bill, statement from your landlord if electricity is included in your rent, statement from the utility company if you participate in an electricity prepayment program.
- The account number and account name for the major sources of heating fuel and the electric bill.
Remember that it is also possible to receive retroactive assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Other Assistance Options Included in the LIHEAP Program
Energy Crisis: If there is an emergency energy situation, such as disconnection of service due to unpaid bills, LIHEAP can provide retroactive assistance to resolve the costs of outstanding bills. This will prevent disconnection of electricity service and keep your home safe.
Energy Repairs: If energy-related repairs were made to your home (such as repairing a heating or cooling system), LIHEAP may consider providing retroactive assistance to cover a portion of the costs.
Past bills: If you have energy bills with outstanding payments due from months ago, LIHEAP can help you resolve those late costs. This is extremely helpful for families who have experienced financial difficulties and were unable to pay their bills on time.
It is important to keep in mind that the requirements may change depending on the state you are in. Whether you have previously received LIHEAP assistance does not affect the household’s eligibility.
