The federal stimulus checks ended in 2021, with no new national initiatives for 2025, although until April 15 of this year, millions of Americans were able to claim millions of dollars. However, multiple states activated financial assistance mechanisms through rebates, tax credits, and subsidies.
These programs, effective as of April 2025, vary in amounts, requirements, and deadlines depending on each jurisdiction. Tax filing deadlines and application processes determine eligibility. Next, I am going to tell you about the initiatives confirmed in five states, along with their current status and access conditions.
Georgia: tax rebates that residents can claim
Georgia distributes automatic refunds derived from a budget surplus in 2023. The amounts, detailed in the Georgia Surplus Tax Refund program, are $250 for singles, $375 for heads of household and $500 for couples filing jointly. Partial residents receive proportional amounts based on their income in the state.
To access, taxpayers must have filed their 2023 and 2024 returns by May 1, 2025. Payments are processed within 6-8 weeks of filing. As of April 23, those who met the requirement have already received or are close to obtaining the funds.
Colorado: “TABOR” Refunds
Under the TABOR amendment, Colorado returns tax surpluses to taxpayers. The 2024 rebate amounts, posted on Colorado TABOR Refunds, range from $177 to $1,130, depending on adjusted income and filing status. Those who filed their return before April 15, 2025 have already received their payments.
Those who requested an extension until October 15, 2025 will obtain the refund later. The process is automatic for those who checked the corresponding option on their tax return.
Michigan: Tax Credit for Working Families
Michigan offers a credit equal to 30% of the federal EITC, averaging $836 per beneficiary. Under the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit, the primary requirement is to meet federal guidelines for moderate income and work activity in 2024.
The process is carried out when filing the 2024 state taxes. Those who filed before April 15, 2025 have already accessed the benefit, while those who used the extension until October can claim it later.
New Jersey: “Anchor” Stimulus Payments Program
New Jersey’s ANCHOR program provides up to $1,750 to homeowners and $1,100 to renters, depending on income. Applications, open from March 2025, close on October 31. Payments will be issued beginning September 15, according to the New Jersey ANCHOR Program.
As of April 2025, the application process remains open, although funds will not be released until the end of the year. Applicants must complete form PAS-1, mailed in early March.
New York: Inflation Refund Checks
A proposal presented in December 2024 calls for payments of $300 to singles and $500 to couples, subject to income limits. Under the Inflation Rebate Check Proposal, funds would be distributed in fall 2025 if the state budget is approved.
As of April 23, 2025, there is no official confirmation regarding approval. It is recommended that you check with your state Department of Taxation for updates.
Other States With Similar Programs
California maintains the local Sacramento Family First program, which provides monthly payments of $725 to 200 households until November 2025.
Virginia is debating state rebates of between $200 and $400, but there is no legislative agreement as of press time. In Pennsylvania, the deadline to request tax refunds closed on December 31, 2024.
Each state establishes its own criteria, so it is recommended to check the official government portals for specific details.
