Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) follows the schedule established by the Social Security Administration (SSA), and is paid each month in coordination with retirement payments.
Its objective is to provide financial support to people who are unable to work due to a disability that is expected to last at least one year or result in the death of the beneficiary.
Those who want to apply for SSDI benefits must have worked and contributed to their Social Security taxes for a sufficient period, and accumulate sufficient credits.
Who Qualifies for SSDI Payments?
These Social Security credits originate from annual earnings and, in most cases, a minimum of 40 credits are required, of which 20 must have been earned in the last 10 years before the disability begins.
It is also worth noting that the amount of the monthly benefit is determined based on the applicant’s income history, not the severity of their disability. Once approved, the beneficiary can receive monthly payments that help cover basic living costs. Additionally, certain family members, such as spouses and children, may also be eligible to receive additional benefits.

Maximum SSDI benefits in 2024
In 2024, the maximum monthly benefit amount for a disabled worker receiving SSDI is up to $3,822, according to SSA data. This figure is anticipated to increase in 2025 due to a cost of living adjustment (COLA).
However, the average benefits are considerably lower. A disabled worker receives, on average, $1,537 per month from the SSA in 2024. Additionally, the estimated average monthly benefit for a disabled worker and their family is $2,720.
Family Beneficiaries
Family members who may be eligible to receive up to 50% of a disabled worker’s benefit include:
- Spouse
- Divorced spouse
- Children
- Disabled adult child before age 22
The total amount that a disabled worker and his or her family can receive ranges from 150% to 180% of the disabled worker’s benefit. This benefit is based on the worker’s average lifetime earnings and not on the severity of the individual disability.
