The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirmed the disbursement schedule for April 2025, a month marked by regulatory changes and economic adjustments. More than 70 million beneficiaries, including retirees, people with disabilities and recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), will receive their funds under a scheme that considers date of birth and type of benefit.
As of today, three payments corresponding to the month of April have already been made, which were those of April 1 (Supplemental Security Income), those of April 3 (Those who receive benefits since before May 1997), and those of April 9 (those retirement beneficiaries whose birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any month).
But, that’s not all: two payments are still to be disbursed for beneficiaries whose birthdays are between the 11th and the 20th of any month (on the third Wednesday) and from the 21st to the 31st of the month (on the fourth Wednesday).
April Social Security Payment Summary
So it’s not too confusing, I’m going to show you the list of April payments in bulleted format. First, these are the payments that have already been made:
- April 1: Beneficiaries of SSI.
- April 3: Those who have received benefits since before May 1997.
- April 9: Beneficiaries with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any month.
Then, the payments that remain to be made in the coming weeks:
- April 16: Beneficiaries with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of any month.
- April 23: Beneficiaries with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of any month.
The SSA always reminds its users that if a payment falls on a weekend or holiday, it will be advanced to the last previous business day. For example, if April 1st were a Saturday, the SSI deposit would be made on Friday, March 28th. In the event of delays, the entity suggests waiting three business days before contacting the authorities.
Modifications by the equity law that will bring thousands of extra dollars to beneficiaries
The Social Security Fairness Act, effective January 2025, eliminated two criticized provisions: the Benefit Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These regulations reduced payments to public workers—teachers, firefighters, federal employees—with pensions outside the Social Security system, as follows:
Retroactive payments: Between February and March 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) distributed a total of $7.5 billion to 1.1 million people. Each beneficiary received, on average, $6,710 dollars.
Permanent increases: Starting in April, monthly payments will increase by $360 for retirees reached by the changes in this aforementioned regulation, $700 for spouses and $1,190 for widows, according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.
The SSA recommends not consulting about the new amounts until after receiving the April payment, since the adjustments will be applied progressively and some may take time due to the cuts in the number of employees made by the Donald Trump government and Elon Musk’s DOGE Department.
