On January 22, 2025, that is, this week, people with disabilities who receive Social Security (retirement) benefits will receive their corresponding payments. This will be the third and final round of payments for the month of January, in which some beneficiaries may qualify to receive up to $4,018, which is the maximum approved by the Social Security Administration (SSA), including the 2.5% cost-of-living increment applied this year (valid until December).
The Social Security retirement payments are distributed into three groups according to the date of birth of the beneficiaries. The first group, made up of those born between the 1st and 10th of each month, receives their payment on the second Wednesday.
The second group, which includes those born between the 11th and the 20th, receives their payment on the third Wednesday; and the third group, which includes those born between the 21st and the 31st, receives their payment on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
There is only one Social Security payment left for beneficiaries in January 2025
January 8 was the payment date for the first group, followed by payments for the second group on January 15. Now, the beneficiaries of the third group are waiting for the next payment that will be made effective on January 22.
The amount beneficiaries receive in the program depends on several factors, including the age at which they decide to retire, the amount they have contributed to Social Security throughout their career, and the length of time during which they have made those contributions.
For example, for those who have chosen to retire at age 62 it can result in a monthly payment of up to $2,831, while waiting until age 70 can result in a benefit of up to $5,108 monthly.
The maximum benefits approved by the SSA
To qualify for the maximum benefit of $5,108 in 2025, applicants must meet certain criteria related to their work history. First, they must have worked and contributed to the Social Security system for a minimum of 40 quarters or 10 years.
Additionally, the maximum benefit amount is available only to those who retire at full retirement age, which is 67 for those born in 1960 or later. If a beneficiary chooses to retire before that age, their monthly benefit amount will be reduced.
The calculation of the amount of each benefit also depends on the income obtained during working life. Generally, higher income over the course of your working career results in a higher benefit amount.
Upcoming February 2025 payments
Regarding the February 2025 payments, these are scheduled according to the dates of birth of the retirees. On the second Wednesday of the month, February 12, those born between the 1st and 10th will receive their benefits.
On the third Wednesday, February 19, payments will be made for those born between the 11th and the 20th. Finally, on the fourth Wednesday, February 26, payments will be delivered to retirees born on or after the 21st. This programming ensures organized management of payments to beneficiaries.
