During the months of December and January, Social Security beneficiaries will receive important payments in a staggered manner, following the calendar established by the Social Security Administration (SSA) for the years 2024 and 2025. This means that the dates are already previously established since last year, so that the beneficiaries have the certainty that their money will arrive.
To start, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries received an advance payment on November 29, which actually corresponded to December. This is because the SSA does not make payments on weekends or holidays: it advances them to the nearest previous business day.
Social Security payments that were already completed in December
After the aforementioned SSI payment, the SSA also sent a second round of payments to beneficiaries in several groups, which are as follows:
- Beneficiaries living outside the US.
- Beneficiaries who receive benefits from both SSI and Social Security.
- Beneficiaries who live in their state pay their Medicare premiums.
- Beneficiaries who requested their Social Security payments before 1997.
Another payment was made for retirees who have a birthday between the 1st and the 10th of any month: the date for them was December 11. This payment format also includes surviving relatives of a deceased beneficiary who has a birthday between those dates.
Three more payments pending for December 2024
To close out the year, the SSA will send three more rounds of payments to retirees and surviving family members, and the dates are as follows:
- December 18: If your birthday falls on any day between the 11th and the 20th of any month
- December 24: If your birthday falls between the 20th and 31st of any month.
- December 31: Advance payment will be sent to SSI beneficiaries, corresponding to January 1 (federal holiday).
Find out before others when your Social Security payment arrives in January
As we said before, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive their January 2025 payment, along with their Social Security payment, on December 31, 2024. Those who receive only Social Security and meet certain conditions, such as living outside the US or having applied for benefits before 1997, will see their payment on January 3.
There are also specific dates based on the beneficiary’s birth month to receive these payments. If your birthday is between January 1 and January 10, you will receive your payment on the second Wednesday of the month, which will be January 8. For those whose birthday is between the 11th and the 20th, the payment will be on the third Wednesday, that is, January 15. Finally, those born after the 20th will receive their payment on the fourth Wednesday of the month, which corresponds to January 22.
