Throughout this year, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) continues to be a lifeline for many families in the United States. These benefits are deposited monthly into an electronic benefit transfer, known as EBT cards, which can be used at a variety of select establishments, including supermarkets and mobile markets, to purchase essential foods.
As per the Pew Research Center, 41.2 million people in 21.6 million households were receiving monthly SNAP benefits payments in the 2022 fiscal year, which ran from October 2021 through September 2022.
Cost of Living Adjustment and Recent Increases
The amount received by each family varies depending on their income and household size. Recently, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) implemented a 3% increase in SNAP benefit amounts, commonly known as food stamps, through the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).
This adjustment was made to offset the impact of inflation on the most vulnerable households. It’s the same increment used to raise Social Security benefits, such as retirement payments, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SS).
