The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP benefits), commonly known as food stamps, is awarded to individuals and families in need who are at food risk. All SNAP beneficiaries know that from time to time they have to be recertifying their eligibility. This is done so that the system is well targeted towards those most in need.
You know, SNAP benefits are for those who have trouble making ends meet and putting food on their families’ table. If the economic situation of one of these beneficiaries changes and improves, moving away from food risk, SNAP benefits should be discontinued to be transferred to a family that really needs it.
The state of New York is one of the most SNAP beneficiaries in the United States. In New York, the agency responsible for administering food stamps is the New York City Human Resources Office (HRA). To continue receiving SNAP benefits, you must recertify them with this office usually every 6 months, or with the periodicity indicated in your particular case.
How to Recertify My SNAP Benefits in New York
When the time comes to recertify your benefits you will receive a notification from the HRA informing that the recertification date is coming. You must meet this date to avoid the interruption of your benefits. There are several ways you can recertify your food stamps. The most practical is, of course, on the internet. How can you do that? Well, you have to visit the official website of the HRA, here.
When you enter this website and click on “online services”, will immediately see the “SNAP Recertification” option. Click there, and follow the step-by-step instructions to complete the form.
Keep in mind that you will be asked for some documents that you can prepare in advance. If you don’t know what those documents are, you can call the SNAP benefits hotline in New York at 1-888-323-4567. An HRA representative will help you complete the entire process. In fact, this is the same number in case you want to apply by phone, if the internet is not understandable to you.
Finally, the most classic option is to visit your local HRA office. You can also call the aforementioned number in advance to find out exactly what documents will be required in your case and then go to the scheduled appointment with the caseworker who will help you complete the paper form for your recertification.
