One State Rolls Out New Property Tax Refund Program

Governor Mark Gordon and the Wyoming Department of Revenue, have already announced the opening of the property tax refund program, for homeowners, applications for this program are already being accepted, this program received an additional allocation in the most recent budget of $20 million, at the request of the governor, this seeks to ensure that homeowners with the most needs can apply and receive the necessary support.

Governor Gordon expressed his gratitude, through a statement, to the legislature, for supporting the importance of this program for Wyoming taxpayers, also for providing the additional resources to offer that help to those who have been most affected by the increase in assessments, this only shows the commitment that the government of Wyoming has to support its inhabitants in this difficult time and thus ensure that access to the available tax benefits is equitable.

How Much Is the Refund You Could Receive?

Homeowners can request a refund of up to half of the average property tax amount, or 75% of their 2023 property tax bill. In 2023, more than 9,000 families were benefited in Wyoming by this program, more than $8 million in refunds were distributed.

In the state, the average refund was approximately $938, but Teton County was the one that stood out for receiving the highest returns.

In 2023, homeowners in Teton County received a total of $1.57 million, representing approximately 20% of Wyoming’s total rebate, 422 applications were approved in Teton County, with an average rebate of $3,568 per application.

Some of the inhabitants of Teton County were benefited by the 2 programs, both the state and the county refund, with 155 out of 307 applicants who were exempted from paying taxes. On average, the bill of the beneficiaries was $5,459, after being exempted from 50% in the two programs, both the state and the county.

This property tax refund program is aimed at eligible homeowners in Wyoming who maintain a complicated financial situation, it was extended in the 2024 budget session, after the signing of House Bill 4 by Governor Gordon in March, where more residents may be eligible, including those who have family income less than or equal to 145% of the median family income (check this table) of the county where they live or the state median, whichever is higher.

There Are Other Requirements to Claim the Cash

Applicants must be Wyoming residents for at least 5 years, be occupants of the home for at least 9 months per year, and have total assets less than $156,900 per adult household member.

Brenda Henson, the director of the Wyoming Department of Revenue, indicated that all those who applied for the refund the previous year will receive the application by mail in mid-April; however, taxpayers can make their application online at official Wyoming Property Tax Refund System website wptrs.wyo.gov starting on Monday.

Please note that refunds will be issued between July 1st and September 30th, as stated by the Wyoming Department of Revenue. “No refunds will be sent prior to the above mentioned dates,” the entity said.
