October Is Coming — Social Security Payments Scheduled This Week

A new month is about to begin and, from the first day, bank deposits and cheques begin to be sent to Social Security beneficiaries

Millions of beneficiaries of various Social Security programs are waiting for their payments, as a new month ends and another begins. We are a couple of days away from the start of the month of October and, from the first day, payments begin for the first group of recipients, which are those who qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.

SSI benefits are intended for people age 65 or older, or those with disabilities or blindness, while Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is for people who have worked and paid Social Security taxes, but who are no longer eligible. They cannot work due to a disability. To receive SSDI, you need to have accumulated enough work credits over the years.

Those Who Receive Social Security Retirement Benefits

Social Security retirement benefits are available to people who have worked and paid Social Security taxes during their working lives. Most people can begin receiving benefits at age 62, although the full amount is received if they wait until “full retirement age” (which ranges from age 66 to 67, depending on the year of birth).

October Social Security Benefits

These benefits are designed to provide retirement income based on historical employment income, but keep in mind that they should not cover all of the income but only a certain portion. Most beneficiaries must supplement some additional income to make ends meet.

When will I receive my Social Security payment in October?

If you have doubts about the upcoming payment dates, both for retirements and for SSDI or SSI, don’t worry, because here are the different payment dates for the month that is about to begin:

Social Security Payment Schedule – October 2024

How is the date I will receive my payment determined?

Social Security payments are generally issued on the second Wednesday of each month. The following payments are made on the two following Wednesdays. The exact date you will receive your money depends on your day of birth:

If you didn’t receive your Social Security check, here’s what you can do

If your Social Security check does not arrive on the expected date, here are some steps to follow to solve the problem:

  1. Wait about three days: Sometimes payments may be delayed due to holidays or temporary processing issues. If you haven’t received your check by the expected date, wait at least three business days before taking action. If your payments are mailed as a check and do not arrive, contact the Social Security office to report it. They can track it or contact the postal service to do so.
  2. Verify your payment information: Check if your banking information or email address (if you receive checks by physical mail) are up-to-date. You can do this by logging into your My Social Security account on the official website.
  3. Contact the SSA: If after a few days you still have not received payment, contact the Social Security by calling the customer service number: 1-800-772-1213 (Business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. You can also go directly to a local Social Security office for personal assistance).
