With the arrival of a new month comes new SNAP benefit payments for qualifying families who are permanent residents in the state of Alabama. SNAP benefits, formerly known as food stamps, are administered in Alabama by the Food Assistance Division of the Department of Human Resources (DHR), an entity that is responsible for sending the payments to all beneficiaries.
This program is designed to improve the nutritional quality of low-income households. It allows these families to purchase nutritious food through Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. With these resources (it is not cash, they are only available on your EBT card) you can buy nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, dairy products, cereals, and more.
You can’t buy alcohol, tobacco, household products, personal care products, hot or prepared meals, or medications and vitamins with SNAP benefits.

How to Qualify for the Maximum $1,751 Food Stamps
The amount you receive in SNAP is calculated considering that the household must spend about 30% of its resources on the food item. The net monthly income of your household is multiplied by 0.3 and subtracted from the maximum allowance according to the size of the household. .
These amounts vary depending on the number of people in your household, set by the federal government and subject to annual changes. For example, if your family is a family of four people, the maximum allowance is $973 per month. The maximum $1,751 is for a family of up to 8 members.
From October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024, the maximum monthly allotments for different household sizes are as follows: $291 for a one-person household, $535 for two people, $766 for three, $973 for four.
But if your family has five members, $1,155 is the maximum amount you could get, while $1,386 is for six. The monthly EBT deposit is up to $1,532 for seven individuals, and $1,751 for eight. Additional members receive $219 each, and the minimum allotment is $23.
