Clif Bar & Company, maker of the popular Clif energy bars, has agreed to a settlement in response to a class action lawsuit challenging the veracity of health claims on its products. The lawsuit, which was filed by a consumer group, alleges that the company made misleading claims on the labels of its bars, suggesting health benefits that the plaintiffs claim do not align with the actual contents of the products.
According to the class action lawsuit, Clif Bar & Company labeled its products with health claims, highlighting purported nutritional benefits. However, the main argument of the lawsuit centers on the fact that these bars contain high levels of added sugar, which, as per the plaintiffs, contradicts the health claims promoted by the company.
The lawsuit alleges that, because of this sugar content, the bars cannot be considered a healthy product, as the labels proposed.
A Juicy $12 Million Settlement for Clif Bars Customers
In light of these allegations, Clif Bar & Company has decided to settle rather than continue protracted litigation. As part of this agreement, the company has committed to establishing a fund of $12 million. This fund will go toward covering legal and administrative costs, as well as providing cash refunds to consumers who qualify as class members.
Importantly, although Clif Bar & Company has agreed to this payment, the company has not admitted to any wrongdoing or acting inappropriately. No court has yet ruled whether the plaintiffs’ claims are true or whether the company is liable for the allegations. In essence, this agreement seeks to resolve the dispute without an admission of guilt by the company.

Clif Bar Class Action — No Proof of Purchase Required!
Consumers who qualify as class members may be eligible to receive a cash payment. The amount each member receives will depend on the number of Clif bars they have purchased and whether or not they can provide proof of purchase.
For those who cannot provide proof of their purchases, a specific payment structure has been established. A group member will receive $5 if they have purchased up to 30 bars, $10 if they have purchased between 31 and 60 bars, and $15 if they have purchased more than 60 bars.
For those who can provide proof of their purchases, payments could be higher. They could be paid up to $15 for the first 60 bars, and $0.25 for each additional bar above 60, with a maximum of $50 cash.
However, these amounts could vary depending on the total number of claims filed by consumers, which could affect the distribution of the total $12 million fund.
Clif Bar Products Included in the Agreement
The agreement specifically covers certain Clif Bar & Company products. Original Clif bars with labels containing the phrase “Nutrition for Sustained Energy” are included in the deal. Additionally, Clif Kid ZBars, which include claims such as “No High Fructose Corn Syrup” and other nutritional claims, are also part of the covered products.
Clif bars must have been purchased between April 19, 2014 and March 31, 2023 in New York or California, or between March 31, 2019 and March 31, 2023 in other parts of the United States, to qualify within the agreement.
