In the month of June, Social Security beneficiaries who usually receive their payments in the second week of the month may experience a particular delay due to a decision by the Social Security Administration (SSA) regarding their schedules. The SSA is the federal agency responsible for arranging payments for U.S. retirees, people with disabilities, and surviving family members of deceased beneficiaries.
Because tens of millions of Social Security payments must be managed each month, the agency distributes payments for each beneficiary group on different dates throughout each calendar month.
The Month of June Brings Changes to the Social Security Calendar
Typically, the Social Security Administration makes benefit payments starting on day 1, the date it is paid to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients. However, in June, these beneficiaries had their payment advanced to May 31 because the first of June is a Saturday. As a rule, the SSA advances those payments that fall on a weekend or holiday to the nearest business day. In this case, it was May 31, which is a Friday and a business day.
In the case of those beneficiaries who receive their retirement payments on the second and third Wednesdays of each month, there are also peculiarities in the June calendar. Since June started on a Saturday, the second Wednesday is June 12, which is when those beneficiaries who have birthdays between the 1st and the 10th of any month will receive their payments.
Date Change Due to a Holiday
Wednesday, June 19th is the payment date for beneficiaries who have birthdays between the 11th and the 20th of each month. However, the 19th is a holiday (Emancipation Day, or Juneteenth), so the payments for this day will be sent one day earlier, on Tuesday the 18th.
The fourth Wednesday is June 26, when beneficiaries who have birthdays between the 21st and the 31st of any month will receive their payments. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries also enter the second, third and fourth Wednesday groups, complying with the same rule of birthday dates.
Adjustments in Other Months of 2024
This adjustment is not exclusive to June. According to the SSA calendar, similar changes are also expected to occur in August and November 2024. This means that payments that are usually made in the second week will be shifted to the third week in those months.
Two Groups of Beneficiaries with Different Dates
Two categories of beneficiaries, which are smaller, are grouped differently. These are those who have been receiving Social Security since before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI. In such cases, the Social Security payment is made on the third of each month, while the checks or deposits for SSI are made on the first of each month (remember that SSI was paid on May 31).
