The CalFresh program operates in the state of California, but it is nothing different from what used to be called the food stamp program, today known at the federal level as SNAP benefits. It is designed to help low-income individuals and families buy nutritious and healthy food, and thus keep them away from the risk of malnutrition or food insecurity. Beneficiaries must meet certain income and resource requirements to certify that they are low-income families and that they do need the help of SNAP CalFresh benefits.
Individuals or families who qualify are a couple of days away from receiving their new month’s payments on their EBT cards. These payments are sent during the first days of each month, starting on the first and ending on the 10th.

Summer EBT — SUN Bucks Approved in California For School-Age Children
The California Department of Social Services has chosen to participate in the Summer EBT – SUN Bucks program, which will send an additional $120 to each school-age child if their household qualifies within certain parameters. The SUN Bucks program works exactly the same as CalFresh, but is active during the summer in the months when there is no school.
Thousands of children in the state of California need the support that school canteens give them to maintain their good nutrition and health. If the schools are closed, the canteens are also closed, which means that these minors may have food problems in those months.
Who qualifies for SUN Bucks? Children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through a School meals application or Alternative Admission Form, or who receive CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal, are automatically enrolled. They don’t need to do anything to register. SUN Bucks provides $40 per month for food during June, July and August 2024 ($120 total).
Your child will automatically receive SUN Bucks if:
- Are between the ages of 6 and 18 and receive CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal; or
- Are between the ages of 0 and 22, attend schools that are part of the National School Lunch and/or School Breakfast Programs, and are approved to receive free or reduced-price meals. Check with your child’s school to make sure your free or reduced-price meal application, or Alternative Admission Form, is on file.
- Children who attend Head Start, are homeless, live in foster care, or are part of a migrant family are also automatically eligible. If your household is eligible, you will automatically receive a SUN Bucks S-EBT card in the mail to the address on file when you applied for CalFresh. You do not need to submit an application. You can use your SUN Bucks EBT card exactly the same as a debit card to purchase foods such as fruits, vegetables, meat, whole grains, and dairy at supermarkets, farmers markets, and other places that accept CalFresh EBT benefits.
