The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, so respected by American citizens, remains in operation and is one of the most important for the household finances of millions of people in the United States who face economic difficulties due to age, a disability or limited resources.
This federal benefit, designed to provide financial support to the most vulnerable, has implemented significant changes in 2025, especially with the recent cost of living adjustment (COLA). The 2.5% COLA adjustment for 2025 increased the maximum monthly SSI benefit to $967, for a single recipient, but as much as $1,450 for a couple.
Dates for SSI payments: the February advance deposit
Monthly SSI payments, which beneficiaries use to cover basic needs such as food, housing and utilities, are generally issued on the first day of each month. However, when this date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the Social Security Administration (SSA) advances the payment. This is the case of the next payment corresponding to February 1, 2025, which will be delivered on January 31.
Recipients can choose from three methods to receive their payments. Direct deposit, the most recommended by the SSA for its security and speed. Then there is the Direct Express Card, which allows you to receive and manage funds without the need for a bank account. The third way is the paper check, although less recommended due to possible delays or losses. The SSA insists on promoting direct deposit to avoid problems and ensure timeliness.
Requirements to receive SSI in 2025
The SSI program is intended for individuals and families with limited income and resources. The main eligible groups include:
- Adults over 65 years of age with low income.
- People with disabilities that prevent them from working.
- Children with disabilities in low-income families.
Eligibility is based on two criteria
First, the SSA takes into consideration the income and resource limits: Monthly income must be below the limits established by the SSA, excluding certain sources of income. Additionally, resources, such as cash or bank accounts, cannot exceed $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples, although certain assets, such as a primary residence or a vehicle, are exempt.
Also, the medical condition is considered: For adults, a disability must be demonstrated that prevents them from working for at least 12 months or is terminal. For children, it is assessed how the disability affects their activities compared to other children of their same age.
It is actually possible to receive SSI and Social Security at the same time
In certain cases, a person can receive both SSI and Social Security benefits. For example, those who have the necessary work history for Social Security and at the same time meet the financial requirements for SSI can access both programs.
However, the total amount of payments can be adjusted to not exceed established limits, preserving the purpose of SSI as supplemental income.
Payments scheduled for January 2025
The Social Security and SSI payment schedule is carefully organized to avoid confusion. For example, SSDI beneficiaries receive their payments based on their date of birth.
Those born between the 11th and 20th of any month will receive their funds on January 15.
Those born after the 20th will receive them on January 22. On the other hand, people who qualify for both SSI and SSDI will receive their Social Security payment on February 3, 2025.
