For the millions of beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, news awaits that will mark the beginning of the new year with a change in their monthly payments that, if not prepared, could cause confusion for recipients.
This change includes an increase in benefits thanks to the annual cost of living adjustment (COLA), designed to help beneficiaries address inflation. However, what has surprised many is that this payment will arrive earlier than usual, raising expectations and some doubts about its nature.
Who receives Supplemental Security Income?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program designed to provide financial assistance to low-income people who face hardships due to advanced age, disability, or blindness. To apply in 2025, applicants must meet certain specific requirements.
Mainly, people over 65 years of age, adults and children with a serious disability that significantly limits their daily activities, or those who are totally or almost totally blind, may qualify, as long as their income and resources do not exceed the limits established by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Additionally, applicants must be US citizens or eligible non-citizens with permanent residency or a specific immigration status recognized by the SSA. You must also live in the United States or one of its territories and not be absent from the country for more than 30 consecutive days.

The average SSI payment, which was $698 until this year, will increase to $715 due to the 2.5% COLA. This adjustment will benefit not only average recipients, but also other categories such as individuals, couples, and essential persons (EP). Next SSI Payment Arrives a Day Early: Here’s Why
Why this early change? The answer is in the calendar. The first day of January is a national holiday, which means that payments that are traditionally made on the first day of each month must be advanced to the last business day of the previous month. For this reason, the January 2025 payment will be issued on December 31, 2024. Although this may seem like an additional benefit, it is important to clarify that it is not an extra payment, but rather a modification to the issuance date.
In addition to the advance, this payment will include the increase in COLA, which positively affects all categories of SSI beneficiaries. Individuals will receive $967 instead of the previous $943, couples will see an increase to $1,450 from the previous $1,415, and essential individuals will receive $484 instead of $472. These figures reflect the need to adjust benefits to rising inflation, especially for low-income and disabled people who rely on SSI to cover their basic needs.
