The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) has just approved payments that will be sent out next week. On Wednesday, September 11, the first round of payments was sent to the first group of retirement and disability benefits (also known as SSDI) recipients. These payments were for individuals who were born between the 1st and 10th of any given month.
According to the Social Security Administration’s calendar, the next payment this month will be on September 18. This payment is for retirement and SSDI beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th of any given month. The last payment in September is on the 25th, when recipients born between the 21st and 31st of any month will receive their benefits.
When is the next Supplemental Security Income payment?
Beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program receive their payments on the 1st of each month, except in months when the 1st falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday. In those cases, the payment is moved to the nearest previous business day. In September, the payment was not made on the 1st because that date fell on a Sunday, causing the SSA to move the payments to Friday, August 30.

This means the next SSI payment will be on Tuesday, October 1, with no changes to the payment date. On Friday, November 1, the funds will be sent again, but in December, the SSA’s unique calendar will come into play: December’s payment will be sent on November 29. Another notable event will occur in December when recipients will receive a payment on December 31, which is in place of the January 1 payment (a holiday).
Who qualifies for SSI benefits in 2024?
The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is aimed at a specific audience, composed of individuals facing financial limitations and in need of assistance to cover basic needs. The most important group receiving these benefits includes individuals aged 65 or older with limited income and financial resources. This includes Social Security retirees who do not receive sufficient benefits to cover their daily expenses.
Children and adults with physical or mental disabilities that limit their ability to work or engage in gainful activities are also eligible. There is no age limit for this group. Lastly, individuals who are considered legally blind may qualify if they meet the program’s income and resource requirements.
Maximum SSI benefit amounts
Until December 31, the maximum monthly SSI benefit for an individual is $943, while qualifying couples who applied as a couple can receive up to $1,415. Keep in mind these are the maximum payment thresholds. The amount you receive, if you qualify, may be lower depending on your income, the income of certain household members, your living situation, and other factors.
For retirees, the maximum monthly payments are established to $4,873, for those who retired with a minimum of working years and Social Security taxes paid, with high salaries.
