Social Security benefits, especially for people with disabilities, are sent each month along with retirement benefits, in three separate payments made on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays. Because payments are tied precisely to being made on those weekdays, they should never be late unless they happen to fall on a holiday. As a rule, the Social Security Administration (SSA) does not send payments on holidays or weekends.
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is designed to help people who are unable to work due to a severe disability that is diagnosed to last at least one year or end in the death of the beneficiary. To be eligible, the person must have contributed to the Social Security system through their payroll taxes.
Who Qualifies for SSDI Benefits?
The applicant must have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a certain period. Generally, a 10-year work history is needed, but this can vary depending on the age of the applicant. The disability must be severe enough to prevent the person from performing any type of meaningful work.

On the other hand, the SSA must recognize the health issue as a valid condition, and the agency has a list of diseases and disorders that automatically qualify, and other conditions not included can be evaluated individually to determine if you can be granted benefits. It is not only evaluated whether the person can continue in their previous employment, but also whether they can adapt to other types of available jobs, considering their age, educational level and skills.
SSDI Benefit Payment Dates in September Will Arrive Just in Time
According to the official SSA calendar, for the months of September and October 2024, the payment dates for SSDI disability benefits are already established, as follows.
First, let’s look at the deposit (or paper check sending) dates for September:
- September 11: Second Wednesday (for those born between the 1st and the 10th)
- September 18: Third Wednesday (for those born between the 11th and the 20th)
- September 25: Fourth Wednesday (for those born between the 21st and the 31st)
Now, let’s look at the SSDI payment dates in October (and the Supplemental Security Income, SSI payment):
- October 1: Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- October 9: Second Wednesday (for those born between the 1st and 10th)
- October 16: Third Wednesday (for those born between the 11th and the 20th)
- October 23: Fourth Wednesday (for those born between the 21st and the 31st)
Why Were There No SSI Payments in the Month of September?
Each month, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are deposited or mailed to beneficiaries on the first day of each month. However, as we learned above, the SSA does not send payments on holidays or weekends. That said, September 1 fell on a Saturday, meaning that this exception applies in that payments are not strictly sent on day 1, but rather the payment of these non-contributory allocations was advanced to Friday, August 30.
After not having a payment in September, then, SSI beneficiaries expect their next check on Tuesday, October 1, then Friday, November 1, and the December one is brought forward to November 29. The year closes with a payment on Tuesday, December 31, the day on which the advance payment of January 1, 2025 is sent, because it is a holiday again.
