If you are a current or former customer of Cash App, the highly popular payment application throughout the United States, there is a possibility that your account and personal data have been compromised by unauthorized third parties.
A proposed $15 million class action settlement could provide a cash payment of up to $2,500 to Cash App users who have been affected by unauthorized access to their accounts over the past six years.
The lawsuit alleges that Cash App and its parent company, Block, failed to take necessary steps to protect the personal information of its users, resulting in security breaches in 2022 and 2023.
Illegal Access to Cash App Accounts, Class Action Alleged
The incidents that prompted the lawsuit include unauthorized access by a former Cash App Investing employee in 2022 and another in 2023, when an unauthorized third party accessed accounts using recycled phone numbers that were linked to them.
These events have raised concerns about the safety of Cash App users, leading to this settlement being suggested as a form of financial compensation for those affected.
The proposed settlement states that affected users could be eligible to receive up to $2,500 if they suffered an unauthorized transfer of funds, or if their personal information or Cash App account was accessed without their consent.
The plaintiffs claim that Block and Cash App were negligent in protecting user information,
and the settlement seeks to remedy these failures.
Who’s Eligible to Be a Plaintiff and Get a Payment?
Those who wish to be considered eligible for a payment under this agreement must meet certain criteria between August 23, 2018 and August 20, 2024. Established criteria include being a current or former Cash customer App or Cash App Investing, and have been affected by unauthorized access to your personal information or accounts. Additionally, users who have experienced unauthorized withdrawals or transfers of funds, or those who have had problems resolving errors in their accounts, may also be eligible to file a claim.
The settlement states that users can claim up to $2,500 for cash losses, plus $25 per hour for time lost due to resolving these issues, with a limit of up to three hours.
Cash losses include costs related to credit monitoring, and users may also file claims for documented transaction losses. Third-party documentation needs to be provided to support these claims, which adds a level of verification to payments.

The Deadline to File a Claim Has Changed
We cannot forget to note that there was a change in the deadline for submitting claims. An earlier version of the form stated the final deadline was October 15, 2024, but the new version sets November 18, 2024 as the deadline.
However, the deal administrator suggested, via email, that “to be cautious, stick to the deadline of October 15, 2024,” indicating that the dates may have been changed recently.
