If you receive SNAP benefits in Texas, pay attention, because February payments are already underway and some families can receive almost $1,000 in a single deposit this month, and for the rest of the months of fiscal year 2025, which ends in September.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, is federal support for low-income families to buy food. In Texas, this program is key for millions of people: around 3.5 million Texans depend on this help to make ends meet, which is equivalent to one in every eight residents of the state.
How do SNAP payments work in Texas?
Here, SNAP benefits are administered through the Lone Star card, which works like a debit card but with dedicated funds to purchase food at establishments authorized by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
If you ever have problems with your card, need to check your balance, or have questions about its use, you can call Texas EBT customer service at 1-800-777-7328 for help.
SNAP amounts depend on the size of your household. In 2025, the maximum payments in Texas will be:
- One person: up to $292 per month (average $199).
- Two people: up to $536 per month (average $364).
- Four people (average family): up to $975 per month (average $726).
- For a family of eight, the maximum is $1,756 (average $1,317).
How to get the SNAP / Lone Star card?
If you do not yet have the Lone Star card, here is an important fact: this is the EBT card with which you can receive and spend SNAP benefits in Texas. It works like a bank card, but instead of being linked to a personal account, it’s loaded with your SNAP balance and even, in some cases, cash assistance.
To request it, the easiest way is to do it online through the official portal of Texas Health and Human Services (just google HHSC). You can also go to a social services office in person or call the Texas SNAP hotline at 1-877-541-7905 for guidance on the process.
